Regardless of whether it connects the floors in a residential building or dominates the central hall of an office building, the choice of the type of staircase significantly affects the character of the space, its usability and visual impression.

U ovom članku predstavljamo pregled glavnih vrsta stepeništa u arhitekturi, podeljenih prema obliku, konstrukciji, materijalima i nameni, sa terminima koji se koriste u srpskoj arhitektonskoj praksi.

Division by shape (floor plan)

The shape of the staircase is most often determined by the available space and the functional requirements of the building.

1. A straight staircase

A single-leg, rectilinear staircase is the simplest form, in which the user moves in one direction without interruption or change of direction. It is ideal for harmonious, rectangular spaces and objects with a low floor height. This type is practical for public buildings, schools, halls, but also in residential buildings when space allows.

Advantages: simple design, easy orientation, good visibility
Disadvantages: occupies more length; it can be tiring if there is no resting place

2. L or U shaped staircase

It consists of two or more straight arms that are connected to each other by a platform (rest). The fracture usually occurs at an angle of 90° (letter L) or 180° (letter U). It is used when there is not enough space for a straight staircase, and it is necessary to ensure comfortable climbing.

Advantages: takes up less space, is safer because the direction of movement is interrupted
Disadvantages: slightly more complex structure, difficult to insert large objects

3. Curved staircase

A curved staircase changes direction gradually and without sharp corners. The stairs are wider in the outer part, while they narrow towards the inner part. It is suitable for objects with limited space, and is also used as a visual accent in more luxurious interiors.

Advantages: aesthetically pleasing, elegant form
Disadvantages: may be impractical for everyday use if not properly designed

3.
